Egusi (melon seeds) is at the heart of West African cuisine. In Nigeria, Egusi Soup is a beloved staple served at family gatherings, weddings, and everyday meals. The seeds are harvested from a special melon variety, sun-dried, and ground into a rich, nutty powder. Every family has their own recipe passed down through generations — some prefer it lumpy, others smooth — but the warmth and togetherness it brings to the table is always the same.
Ground melon seeds (Citrullus colocynthis). 100% natural, no additives or preservatives.
For Egusi Soup: Toast ground egusi lightly in palm oil over medium heat. Add stock (beef, chicken, or fish), stir well. Add leafy greens like spinach, ugu, or bitter leaf. Simmer for 15-20 minutes. Season with crayfish, stockfish, and seasoning cubes. Serve with pounded yam, fufu, garri, or rice.
As a thickener: Add 2-3 tablespoons to any soup or stew for a rich, creamy texture.
For Egusi Pudding: Mix with peppers, onions, and palm oil. Wrap in banana leaves and steam for 30 minutes.
