Scent leaves (nchanwu in Igbo, efirin in Yoruba) are the aromatic herb of West African cooking, with a fragrance reminiscent of basil and cloves. These intensely flavoured leaves are indispensable in pepper soup, where their aroma defines the dish. Also used in traditional medicine, scent leaves are believed to aid digestion and treat colds.
100% dried scent leaves (Ocimum gratissimum)
Crumble dried leaves directly into pepper soup, stews, and sauces in the last minutes of cooking. Use in goat meat pepper soup, catfish pepper soup, and chicken stew. Add to jollof rice for extra aroma. Can be steeped in hot water for a herbal tea. Use sparingly — the flavour is concentrated.
